Happy to hear it.  I'm typing with one hand today so I'll keep it short.  Cheers, Skip

Hey Joe Curto,  When did you slip in here?  You are still playing in these oddball British cars too.  We met at a Minor meet in Rockland State Park back in the 70's.  The J stands for Jim as in Jim English.  Welcome aboard, are you still in the SU etc business?

I recently came upon a pair of HS8 SUs which I want to adapt to a Datsun L6 series engine (Z car).  The engine has been stroked to 2932cc with forged flat top pistons, Carillo rods, arp bolts, larger valves, 8.8:1 compression, a mild street cam & a pre-smog recurved electronic distributor. The intake manifold has been bored to match the 2" carburettors.  There is a tag on one of the HS8's, labeled AUD397R. I suspect this tells what car these were originally equipped. What is missing is any information on that vehicle, although I suspect it may have been a 71 - 73 Jaguar XJ6.  Additionally, I have no clue how cold start enrichment is adjusted; possibly cable? I've been able to find an exploded view of an AUD397 on Burlen's site, but again, this does not show any linkage to manipulate the height of the fuel nozzle levers. Please, anyone out there with experience with these carbs, I'd like to purchase rebuild kits & know how fuel enrichment was designed to work.  Thanks in advance...Dave

Dave:  I'm away from the shop until Sunday, but I'll look through my material.  I doubt it was on an XJ6 of that vintage as they were using the abominable Strombergs by then (if memory serves correctly.)
Joe will probably correct me when he answers...

Dave:  A cursory examination of the SU listings in Burlen's catalog shows the AUD397F and AUD397R were installed on the XJ6/Daimler Sovereign 4.2 in the years 1971-1973.  But, I don't think these were imported--someone correct me here...

Skip,
The carbs came off of an Australian vehicle which explains how they could have been spec'd to a 71-73  XJS.  The exploded view of these carbs on Burlen's site appear to be exactly the unit's I have, and I have every part shown on the exploded view. I have no idea how the fuel enrichment levers are activated.  My Datsun Z car utilized a pair of wires connected to a lever on the center console to activate the enrichment circuit which also increased the idle speed for cold running. If I attach those same wires to the HS8 fuel nozzle levers, I can enrich fuel metering, but there will be no increase idle speed as they are not linked to the idle stops or butterflies.  My real question amounts to this: How did Jaguar physically install these carbs to gain fuel enrichment & a higher cold start idle? I believe I'll have to make some sort of bracket, and I'd much rather take my cue's from factory engineers instead of blazing my own path. I'm sure the SU HS8 was used in more then one installation; any information on how these units were installed is more then welcome.  Thanks, Dave

Wow--you just went way over my head, for sure.  Joe may know that.  I'll have to dig into my muddy mind to see if I know anyone who can answer that.  Later, Skip
